GANT, the originator of American Sportswear, has returned to its birthplace of New Haven, Connecticut with the opening of their first-ever Gant Campus Store at 268 York Street and Broadway. The store is housed in a historic building originally built in 1910 expressly for Langrock Fine Clothing and designed to match Yale’s Collegiate Gothic architectural style. The shop sits adjacent to the Yale University campus and along the main thoroughfare for commerce and socializing among students, faculty, and residents.
The Gant Campus Store offers a carefully curated collection of clothing and accessories for men from Gant, Gant Rugger, Gant by Michael Bastian, and a special editionYale Co-Op branded shirt collection, which was recently resurrected from the company’s 1960’s archives.
The store concept, unique to New Haven, features a library feel that pays homage to the brand’s local historical significance and university-centric roots. Dark stained American oak was sourced for flooring, as was the locally sourced millwork from craftsmen responsible for the renovation of the historic Morey’s Temple Bar. The walls are adorned with recreated wooden panelling taken from original millwork found in the basement level of the building. Vintage library tables and other fixtures were brought in from local sources; including a retrofitted chalkboard on wheels that now acts as a mirror, while vintage school house lights are suspended overhead. Carefully framed archival newsprint articles and historical imagery from both Gant and Yale adorn the walls in thoughtful focal points throughout. The artwork touches upon the brand’s local manufacturing legacy and factory-floor heritage, vintage advertising imagery, as well as historic and recent photography from the Harvard-Yale Regatta.
