College Night welcomes students back to New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — School is back in session at colleges across Connecticut — and with that comes the annual College Night at the Shops at Yale.

The sun was shining to welcome students back to New Haven for College Night Thursday.

“This is the biggest public student in the state,” Dave Delvecchio, Director of Real Estate Asset Management and University Properties at Yale, said about the celebration. “There is nothing bigger than this.”

Organizers expected as many as 2,000 students — just from Yale, but other local schools as well, including Quinnipiac, Southern, Fairfield and more.

“It’s nice to just get together,” Lani Gonzalez, a Yale student, said. “We’re all college kids just having fun and getting to know the city.”

Local shops and businesses were in on the action as well — and its not a taste of New Haven without apizza.

“Apizza is such a cornerstone of who we are as a community,” Frencesca Messina, Project Manager at Sally’s Apizza, said. “So, just welcoming in the new students with that in mind, it is awesome bringing that piece of history.”

As the event rolled into the evening, more students arrived for free food, shirts, glasses and many opportunities to learn about the city.

“That’s why I think this event is so great,” Sydney Fraley, a college freshman, said. “Because it’s the perfect opportunity to explore stuff.”
